Awards Guidelines
There will be two
Bill Colvard Friend of Education Awards.
An individual and a group award will be given. Nominees may not be currently employed by the Shelby County Board of Education. The purpose of the award is to recognize the contributions of individuals, and groups or corporations that have been involved in Shelby County Schools. A plaque will be presented to the winning individual and group representative at SCEA Spring Banquet in May.
All nominations will be recognized at SCEA General Meeting on March 24, 2008,
4:30 PM.
The entries should be presented as follows:
1. Organization: (such as a scrapbook, photo album, a 3 ring
notebook or folder of some type, loose sheets in an
envelope won't result in a winner!!)
2. Neatness: Typed or printed (legibility is a must)
3. Quality: Fact sheet supporting why/how nominee has helped
education. (This one item should be limited to a maximum
of three typewritten pages.)
4. Support Data: such as labeled pictures, letters, testimonials....

TEA
- E. HARPER JOHNSON HUMAN RELATIONS AWARD
CRITERIA
Any educator or lay person in any community, who has contributed outstanding leadership in
the advancement of intergroup and interpersonal understanding, is eligible. The Educator category is for those individuals who are active or retired educators. Lay persons are those individuals who are not professional educators.
The individual selected shall have demonstrated a concern for and have actively worked with various groups. The activities may have involved different cultures, sub-cultures, social, racial, and /or religious groups.
Activities of the nominee must be of a continuing nature.
The award may be made for activities of the nominee on the local, state, national or
international level.
The award is not limited to UEP members; however, if the nominee is presently an educator,
he or she must be a member of the United Education Profession (UEP).
MECHANICS OR PROCEDURE
1. The Human Relations Committee of the local association shall get permission to sponsor
the award from the appropriate local governing body.
2. All local association members shall have the opportunity to submit names of nominees for the award. Those associations presenting a nominee for the E. Harper Johnson Award shall:
(a) Submit all entries in scrapbook form.
(b) The scrapbook should be organized following the format below:
I. Introduction
Rationale for recommendation.
II. Biographical Sketch
Include length of time candidate has been involved in human relations activities.
III. Activities (examples: student activities, parent, community , teacher, administrator, other activities). Activities should include need, description, impact and documentation.
(c) Send documentary evidence, such as newspaper clippings, testimonials, from persons who know the individual (limit 10), a listing of any previous awards or recognition from organizations or associations which substantiate the person's active, continuous pursuit in this area.
(d) Multi-media documentation shall not exceed five (5) minutes in length.
(e) Include a photograph of the nominee. A 5 1/2" x 7" glossy black and white picture is preferred.
3. The awards will be made at the TEA Representative Assembly.

Each school is expected to nominate one person from their school; those nominees will then go on to become a list of candidates for the Shelby County Education Association's Heart Person.
The nominee should be an individual who shows compassion, concern, and love for students, teachers, and the teaching profession. Your nominee must also be a member of the association.
In 1 page or less write why you have selected your nominee, attach to this cover, and send to:

The Dr. Sara G. Folis Award is a very prestigious honor for any recipient. Therefore, I encourage you to submit nominees. All nominees will be recognized at the Shelby County Education Association General Meeting.
OUTSTANDING NEW TEACHER AWARD
**The teacher must be new to Shelby County Schools as of January 2006.
**The teacher must be a current member of the Shelby County Education Association (SCEA).
The individual being nominated for this award must have demonstrated the following characteristics:
* Communicates effectively with students, parents, and other school employees
* Emphasizes quality of learning
* Demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching
* Reflects professionalism
* Provides an appropriate learning environment
OUTSTANDING NEW CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE AWARD
**The classified employee must be new to Shelby County Schools as of
January 2006.
**Shelby County Education Association membership is not required.
The individual being nominated for this award must have demonstrated the following characteristics:
* Communicates effectively with students, parents, and other school employees
* Reflects professionalism
* Demonstrates an ability to get along with others
Nominations must be limited to one typed page
(8 1/2" x 11" paper) reflecting the above
characteristics and submitted to:

Criteria for Selecting An Association for the
TEA Local Association Human Relations Award
The Tennessee Education Association's Human Relations Award will be presented to the local association that has developed and carried out an outstanding continuing human relations program.
ELIGIBILITY
The award is open to all local associations that have a human relations committee registered with the Tennessee Education Association.
PROCEDURES FOR NOMINATION
Every association that submits a nomination for the TEA Local Association Human Relations Award shall present the following information.
1. A detailed statement of the goals of the local association's
human relations program and the association activities under-
taken to achieve the established goals.
2. The materials may be in writing, printed, or typewritten.
All written and printed material must be submitted in a
scrapbook with durable binding. In the event that
audiovisual materials such as well documented tapes,
films, recordings, and other types of material have been part
of your human relations program, these materials are welcome
and should be submitted with the descriptive materials.
3. Newspaper clippings, testimonial letters from individuals or
businesses (limit 10) and similar materials should be used
to support your nomination.
4. Winners will be notified and the presentation of the award
will be made to the association at the TEA Representative
Assembly.

Susan B. Anthony Award Criteria
